What happened?  Well, the beauty of living in Wisconsin is that moisture in the ground freezes.  This is when “The Frost Sets In”.  When water freezes, it expands.  This is why your slabs of concrete can look so out of place during the winter (if they were not already last fall).  The major problem with this process is that it can damage the soil below your concrete slabs.  When things warm up again the soil can be more compact than it was in the fall.  This will allow the weight of the slab to settled with the overburdened soil.

Replace It:

Replacing the slab can be costly.  You need to come in with heavy equipment to remove the slab that is in otherwise good condition.  Poor the new slab and hope the dog does not walk across it leaving his permanent signature in the slab.

Raise It:

Fast, easy and inexpensive, concrete raising is the method of drilling small holes in the concrete to inject material under the slab to raise it back to level.  This repair is typically half the cost of replacement and typically comes with a warranty against settlement.

Highway Repair: 15×45′ Off-Ramp area located in Octonto County was raise 2 1/2 inches with polyurethane foam. The ramp was closed for a total of 2 1/2 hours while the concrete repairs were made to fix the low spot.

After holes are drilled in the settled section of highway, polyurethane foam is injected under the slab. The foam expands to fill voids and raise the settled highway section. 15 seconds to expand, 15 minutes to cure. This job took 50 minutes start to finish and used 205 lbs of HMI polyurethane concrete raising material.

Polyurethane concrete lifting is the new-comer to the arena.  Although it has been a known solution for about 20 years, until recently it was primarily applied to the DOT work to raise concrete streets and highway pavement.  More recently this method has become available for residential application.

Why is polyurethane different? Polyurethane concrete lifting offers fewer and smaller holes than mudjacking.  It also offers a consistent material that is specially formulated to raise concrete.  This material is lightweight and seconds after injection sets up to a permanent foam consistency that will never loose density.

Mudjacking or slabjacking has been around for over 50 years.   Local availability of material can be inconsistent.  However because this material is so inexpensive this can offer a less expensive repair option.

MY CONCLUSION – The old stand by mudjacking will fit with customers who are looking for an inexpensive repair method. The newer polyurethane concrete raising process will fit a customer that is looking for a nearly invisible repair method.  Both methods have a future and the winners will be the customer that now has options.  In the end there will always be plenty of concrete to lift and it will always be cheaper to raise it vs. replace it.
